What's the Difference Between First and Second Editions?

Second Edition seeks to improve on the existing rules contained in first edition by simplifying some of the mechanics (for example, Actions are simplified in second edition). Second edition also provides additional playable heritages for PCs, revised monsters, and improved and expanded subsystems (like magic). 

The lore of Far Away Land has also been greatly expanded in Second Edition and the Book of Lore (which is compatible with both editions) provides stories, maps, epic poems, adventure locations, and tons more content.

What is the Far Away Land Role-Playing Game?

Far Away Land (FAL) is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game with elements of sci-fi, horror, humor, and pop-culture. FAL is focused on storytelling, dice rolling, and old school play. The rules are streamlined and simple so that brand new gamers and veteran gamers alike can pick it up and play. 

How to Play Far Away Land

Far Away Land uses a simple d6 mechanic where players roll a handful of six-sided dice and take the high roll. That roll is then compared with a target number or opposed roll. Bonuses and penalties can be added to increase/decrease the number of dice rolled. Optional rules allow GMs and players to expand and contract and house-rule as they see fit.

The Basic Mechanics of FAL
  • 3 Stats determine base scores.
  • Boons and Flaws add bonuses and penalties to Stat rolls.
  • Magic is spell-based and elegant.
  • Combat is fast and brutal.
  • Optional rules like Battle Scar can stave off death but leave PCs permanently maimed.
  • Creating a PC is open, fast, and flexible. Players can create any type character they can imagine.

What Makes Far Away Land Unique?

Far Away Land is designed to feel like gaming from when you were a kid, when anything in a game was possible. Far Away Land has an expansive and unique setting and history. While it contains common tropes of fantasy rpgs such as elves, dwarves, and magic; these elements are minor in the grand scope of the game as FAL features hundreds of unique races such as noknil clones, the cyclopean orka, the giant protector snails known as olantas, and the psionic garl snails and brain fish. Far Away Land is a vibrant world full of conflict and history. The mechanics of the game are modular and are designed to reflect this uniqueness in their approach to combat, role-playing, and character development while keeping an old-school feel (and plenty of dice rolling).

How Can I Get Started Playing?

To get started playing FAL you can download the free Quick Start Rules. These are a condensed version of the Far Away Land system to give you a good idea of what the game is all about and how it works. We also have loads of free adventures you can download on our site.
